Kurt Jellinger Prize 2010 for Outstanding Scientific Writing in Neuropathology

The Kurt Jellinger Prize, sponsored by Springer’s Acta Neuropathologica, is aimed at promoting excellent scientific publications in the fields of clinical or experimental neuropathology. It is named after Kurt Jellinger, who has contributed many important publications in almost every area of neuropathology and has served as Managing and Executive Editor of Acta Neuropathologica for 29 years.
Since 2005 the prize has been awarded every year to a young scientist (preferably under 40 years of age) who has shown special distinction both in neuropathology, or a related Weld of neuroscience, and in outstanding scientific writing as exemplified by an unpublished review article submitted to Acta Neuropathologica by the applicant. The submitted review article represents the basis for the prize committee’s decision. The prize includes not only money, but also the privileges (and duties) of shaping a neuropathology journal.

The recipient will receive:

  • An invitation to join the Editorial Board of Acta Neuropathologica for an initial period of 3 years
  • An invitation to present a lecture at the Annual Meeting of the German Association of Neuropathology and Neuroanatomy, where the prize will be awarded. The meeting will take place September 16-19, 2009, in Düsseldorf, Germany.
  • Expenses for this meeting (travelling, accomodation, registration)
  • The sum of €1,000

This international prize is open to all scientists of all nationalities. Only self nominations are considered.
Applicants should submit a review article on any subject that might be of interest to neuroscientists, preferentially on mechanisms of neurological disease, as well as a CV, to the Editor-in-Chief of Acta Neuropathologica. Usually, but not necessarily, the subject of this review will focus on the author´s research area. The article must have a single author. There are no other formal requirements. While the article of the winner will be published in Acta Neuropathologica, review articles not awarded the Kurt Jellinger Prize will also be considered for publication.

Deadline is 28th of February 2010

The price winner will be invited to present a lecture at the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) Forum of
European Neuroscience where the prize will be awarded. The meeting will take place 3–7 July 2010,
in Amsterdam, The Netherlands (see http://fens2010. neurosciences.asso.fr/).

Because of the recent advances in molecular genetics the International Society of Neuropathology (ISN) produces a book series entitled "Pathology & Genetics" with up-to-date information on genetics, pathology and hophysiology of various diseases afflicting the nervous system and muscles. Clinical features, epidemiology, imaging methods, therapeutic influences and animal models are presented as well. Since the books are produced by the ISN itself they can be sold at a low price (USD 95).

A new volume (5) entitled "Cerebrovascular Diseases" dealing with all major diseases associated with vascular abnormalities and circulatory disturbances in the brain and spinal cord can now be ordered. The book is written by more than 60 international experts, and presents the information in a comprehensive and easily accessible manner. Dr Hannu Kalimo Finland is the Volume Editor; Drs Harry V.
